[ His body is wasted from the radiation and the measles they gave him in order to kill the cancer cells. He lost his hair long ago and they've cured the measles that they gave him, but no one is sure yet whether they've cured the cancer or not. He, Annie, and his parents are waiting in the hospital waiting room for Gus to go in for the PET scan that will tell them if he's still got cancer. He's wearing track pants, a tee shirt and a beanie pulled down over his bald head. Just the mere act of being here is exhausting, but he's got Annie's hand clenched tightly in his own. They're sitting on one of those vinyl loveseats with his parents across from them and they are pressed as closely together as is possible.
He looks over at Annie and leans in to press a kiss to the top of her head then leans against her. He doesn't want to be here. He'd rather be anywhere but here right now, which prompts him to whisper in her ear: ]
