Because of that, he was more careful about touching her, making certain that he gave her warning or that the touches were innocent and careful. He let her initiate anything deeper. He didn't want to scare her or spook her.

He didn't mean to be mysterious. There was just so much about his life that was hard to explain or that would put someone in danger if they knew. He has already put enough people in danger. He didn't want to add to that number.

Indeed it was.

He furrowed his brow, giving her a confused look. "Wait. You mean I'm not ethnic? The nuns at the orphanage lied to me all this time," he joked. "From this point on, I shall endeavor to be very, very nice to you. As soon as I figure out what it is I have to do to get some of this dessert, I'm on it." He smiled at her comment. "By ordering Chinese or pizza or by eating things my clients bring me in lieu of payment." Mostly it was the latter. He couldn't even lie about that.

Maybe it was because he was very, very white?
