For Dean

They say that opposites attract and, for Kara, that's always been true. She's always tended to spend her time with people that normally wouldn't mesh with her. Winn with his tech savvy that's entirely over her head; Mon-El, who had been initially so selfish and self-absorbed. Dean had the misfortune of following a paper trail to National City only to find himself in way over his head when he'd attempted to face the threat.

Dean kills to neutralize a threat. Kara does whatever she can do avoid that. Dean likes to drink and laugh and listen to loud rock music; Kara prefers a glass of wine with pizza, potstickers, and Netflixing a musical.

They'd come together to end an alien threat — Kara's way, not his; National City is her city, after all — and, weirdly, they seem to get along really well. Dean doing what Dean does means that he's seldom around and he can't come out to National City to 'hang out' very often, but fortunately, Kara can fly. At first, it's just once in a while when he's not on a job and things aren't imploding in National City that she'll zip out to wherever he happens to be and they'll order a pizza and hang for a while. He's one of the few people who knows her real name and it's nice to be able to surround herself with people like that. She has more fun that way.

And then she and Mon-El fell apart.

Everything changed for Kara when she and Mon-El broke up for good. She hadn't realized until that moment that she'd been envisioning a future for herself and now...well. Sure, she's only twenty-five, but she's not getting any younger. The idea of starting all over again to build toward something it exhausting and daunting.

She spends more nights in crappy motel rooms staring at the water-stained ceilings, elbow to elbow lying on her back beside her new best friend while his brother sleeps on the other bed several feet away. It never occurs to her that she could actually talk to him about her problems; her fears, until one night when he's probably just about dozed off and she's miscalculated the sound of his breathing to assume he's fallen asleep like his younger brother and she mutters it quietly to herself, thinking no one will hear her.

"...I'm going to die alone, aren't I...that's what this is."

Kara sighs and frowns, scrubbing her face with both hands before pushing herself to sit up. She should go and let them sleep. "No picket fence, no perfect house, no babies, just...Supergirl. Forever." Another sigh as she stands, smoothing down her skirt and shifting the cape to straighten it out so that she won't lose her balance when she takes off.
