preemptiveforgiveness: (Harder than it seems)

Maybe if Matt hadn't lost Elektra, Foggy and Karen all in one fell swoop, he would have been more sure of it. Maybe if Matt weren't a martyr, he would have been certain of Foggy's return. All of that is unimportant because Foggy is here and despite what he's been through, Matt has more hope than he did twenty-four hours ago.

"I know. I hate it, but I know." He could stop doing what he's doing, at least in theory. However, even if he could make himself quit being a vigilante, he would still hear the cries for help, the plans for destruction. Other people without his hearing, his sense of smell, get to ignore the pain the city is in. He doesn't, not ever and because of that he has to do what he does. Matt clears his throat. "I'm sorry." He's sorry that he has to do this, that Foggy has to pay part of that price. "I can't--" he stops, pressing his lips together. "I hear them, you know? People crying for help, people crying, resigned to their fate, people in pain, people planning destruction. I hear it all and I can't ignore it, Foggy. I can't. You couldn't either, not if you heard them." He's never told anyone this; he didn't think anyone would understand. Maybe they won't, but he figures it's worth explaining to Foggy regardless. At least it's possible he'll understand why Matt has to do it.

"I'll do my best. Don't hesitate to scream bloody murder if you need me." Given what he's told Foggy, it seems like good advice.
